Website 101

Setting up a website is not very difficult so long as you're armed with the knowledge to get it done correctly. When I was first trying to setup my first website in the mid 90's, I had no idea how to get started. I started my search on the web. Soon, I learned that I would have to create a series of pages (html files) that would be interconnected (have links from one page to the next). I was very comfortable with tools such as Microsoft Word, and in no time at all, I was able to create my first website.

My content was written, but now what? How do I go about setting up a website? I again ventured to my browser to do another web search. This time, I discovered that to setup a website I first needed a domain. With some more research, I discovered that I had to register the domain with a registrar such as Network Solutions. Once I had my domain, I thought I could "move" my web pages to the domain but guess what? It's not that easy! I learned that I needed a web host that would "host" my site and charge me a monthly fee (around $59). Great, I signed up with a web host and moved my web pages to my site with an FTP utility that my web host provided me with. My site was still not live when I entered my domain in my browser. I next learned that I had to associate my domain with the named servers of my web host. This was a setting on my domain registrar's website. Now my site is live right? No! It took 3 days for my registrar to propagate the named server changes of my domain across the internet.
